AN INTRODUCTION TO DESIGN THINKING

“Design Thinking"is a human-centered approach to innovation that uses principles of designwithin the practical constraints of business. According to the Harvard BusinessReview, "businesses are realizing that the only way to differentiate theirgoods and services in today's overstocked, materially abundant marketplace isto make their offerings transcendent – physically beautiful and emotionallycompelling." BusinessWeek ran an article titled "Tomorrow's B-School?It Might Be A D-School" stating that, "much of corporate America...has started thinking about thinking. And all that thinking has led manyexecutives to the same conclusion: We need help thinking." This 90-minutelecture presents an approach on how to think creatively, an introduction to theconcept of Design Thinking and its role in the development of innovative newproducts and services. Topics include human observation, narrative, storytelling, play, experimentation, iterative design, constraints, and rapidprototyping.

In response to the U.S. General Management Admission Council’s (GMAC) statement that “Globally, leaders are calling on their people for more creativity and more innovation, and are calling upon the arts for inspiration”, De Ritis designed a course titled Arts-Based Learning for Managers. Together with his Northeastern University colleague, Dr. John Friar, De Ritis led one of the first workshops on Design Thinking at Tsinghua University’s X-Lab, and has recently been appointed as a Resident Expert with Tsinghua’s United Design Center.

Professor De Ritis earned his Ph.D. in Music Composition with an emphasis in computer applications form the University of California Berkeley, and his M.B.A. in High Tech from Northeastern University. Prior to his current role at Northeastern, he was Head of the Multimedia Studies program, a member of the Board of Advisors for School of Technological Entrepreneurship, and led the development of the Digital Media masters for the College of Professional Studies.

From 2002-2011, De Ritis led the concept and development of the “Online Conservatory” collaboration between the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Northeastern University, which was cited as a “Best Practice” in “web-based marketing” by Forrester Research (2006), a leading U.S.-based market research firm.
