“TheAsian Century – End of the Free Ride”
TheWestern model of consumption-led economic growth cannot be replicated in Asia, according to Chandran Nair. He argues that 6 billion Asians in 2050 cannot andshould not aspire to live like the West. Instead, Mr. Nair offers analternative paradigm for governments, business leaders, and academics toconsider. He argues that economic policy needs to be realigned; to avoid thecatastrophic outcomes that could result from the relentless promotion of aconsumption-led growth model in Asia, at a time when resource constraints areonly too apparent.
Atthe heart of his views is the search for new business models which do notthrive on underpricing resources and externalizing costs but are insteadfocused on the need to spread prosperity by meeting the basic needs of themajority. These will be in critical areas such as food (safe, secure), waterand sanitation, affordable housing, access to low carbon energy, basichealthcare and education.
Chandranstrongly advocates a more sustainable approach to development in Asia, advisinggovernments and multi-national corporations to instill these principles intotheir policies and key decision making processes. Chandran is a regular speakerat global forums including World Economic Forum, where he is a member of theGlobal Agenda Council on Governance for Sustainability, APEC Summits and OECDevents.
